How To Turn Your Passion Into A Blog TODAY With These Quick & Easy Steps

So, you want to start a blog but have no idea where to start?

I have been blogging for a very long time and my first blogs were pretty much “diaries” of my teenage years on LiveJournal. It was more of a creative outlet and wasn’t something I could’ve monetized back then but now, nearly 20 years later, the game has really changed!!

Did you know that you can start a blog in 2019 and turn it onto a full-time income?

I know it completely sounds like a myth, but these days, it’s totally real and I want to help you along your path to getting start. Of course, monetizing takes time but if you are willing to invest the time and dedication, it will be worth it!

No matter your passion, you can start a blog and share it with the world. With the dedication and know-how, you can turn that blog into a money-making powerhouse and build a community of loyal followers.

Just follow these quick, easy steps to start your blog today (you can figure out the rest later!):

Choose Your Blogging Niche

What will your blog be about? If you already know, then go ahead and move onto the next step!

If you aren’t sure just yet, that’s okay! It’s time to start thinking about what you are passionate about.

Try to niche down and choose 2-3 primary focuses for your blog. Here are some questions you should be thinking about while deciding:

  • What are your areas of expertise? Is this content something you want to write about?
  • What are you passionate about? Think about the things that get you excited!
  • Will you have one theme/topic or will you have many?

It’s easy to overthink it, so try not to if you can. Not all bloggers knew what their goals were when they started out. Start and figure it out later!

Research Your Competition

Your blog will be your business (especially if your goal is to eventually monetize it!) so make sure you do your research on who your competitors are. Keep your pulse on what they are doing and how they are doing it. Don’t copy them, but you can certainly look to them as inspiration!

Sign Up For Your Social Media Accounts

Once you have decided on your topics of focus and your domain name, research your social media accounts and make sure they are available! I would get all of the social media accounts first, since that is free to do, before registering for your domain.

This will be come your brand, so making sure you own AND love it are important! But don’t get hung up on this step if you aren’t 100% into it because you can always change it later.

Getting started is the most important step, after all!

Register Your Domain & Choose Your Hosting Plan

After you have your social media accounts locked down, grab that domain! Some hosts, such as HostGator, will even give you a FREE Domain when you sign up for a hosting account with them. (this typically costs $12-$16!)

Click “choose a plan” then select a plan that works for you. I’d start with a smaller plan since they are low-cost and you can always upgrade when the time comes!

Once you have your domain and social media set up, you should also think about creating a logo to use across all of the platforms. You can work with an inexpensive freelancer on Fiverr.com to create a logo that expresses your personality and brand!

Install WordPress

Now that you have your domain and hosting, it’s time to install WordPress.

WordPress is essentially the dashboard for where you will create and maintain your website.

Please be aware that there are two WordPress options and to know the difference is so important. WordPress.com (free, but not self-hosted) and WordPress.org (self-hosted). It’s common for free sites (not self-hosted) to not allow advertising, affiliate links, sponsored posts, etc. If you plan to monetize your site, make sure that you are self-hosted (it will be worth it!).

HostGator is designed to help you set up your self-hosted WordPress site, so make sure you take advantage of all they have to offer! You have two options: you can do it yourself, or you can let HostGator do this for you in one-step (which I highly advise!)

Choose Your WordPress Theme

Think of your WordPress theme as the template for which you will use to build your site from. There are tons of free themes out there to get started with.

Here are a couple of resources:

Write Your First Blog Post

Now that your blog is all set up, it’s time for your very first post! On the left hand side of the WordPress Dashboard, you’ll be able to add pages and change your blog’s appearance. You might want to add some pages first. To do so, go to “Pages”, click on the top to “Add New” and name your page, and add in some relevant information.

To add a new blog post, again go to the left side and click on “Posts” > “Add New.”

Next Steps: Learn How to Market & Monetize

As for marketing your blog, learn as much as you can about the different marketing options that you will have as a blogger, and build a business plan. If you plan to make money from your blog, then it will definitely be a business!

Are you going to use email marketing? Social media marketing? You need to know exactly how you’re going to market your blog and your products before your launch your blog.

As you can imagine, there is a bit more involved to sharing your blog with your audience. I do recommend waiting to promote your blog until you have 5-8 blog posts live before you start pushing your blog posts to social media and other networks. This will allow your audience to get a feel for your blog and your message.

If you’re going to monetize your blog, it will be important to learn how to do so through affiliate marketing.

You’ll need to have a blog to start applying to the various affiliate marketing platforms. Two of the easiest and most lucrative affiliate platforms are ShareASale or Adsense from Google.
